Provodnik is an interdisciplinary agency for urban culture research, contemporary art and travel. We apply artistic practices and cultural anthropology methods to the study of urban environments.
Our projects exist in different formats: cultural mediation, artistic research, articles and seminars on art and the city, city tours, and exhibition tours. Our programmes show the city from different angles: they combine historic, cultural, and artistic contexts.
The very core of Provodnik is a close connection with people. We shape our projects with the help of experts, friends, and colleagues who make up the local cultural scene: historians, urbanists, art curators, artists, and many others. They share our approach to the city and its culture, yet have their own experience and vision.
We think that urban space is more than just a complex of buildings and stories about them. We strive to look at the city as the totality of its manifestations.
In a world of cheap flights and tour apps, traveling has become easier than ever. New technologies promise tourists instant access to the charm and authenticity of another culture. But authenticity tends to be elusive.
Based on our research and the work of specialists in different fields we design programmes and tours, that help to interact with the city in a new way.
The founders of Provodnik are cultural practitioners who grew up in Moscow. We are working in museums and galleries shaping the city’s cultural life. We have experience developing our own cultural initiatives, working for smaller independent projects such as gallery ISSMAG or MediaArtLab, as well as big institutions — V-A-C Foundation, Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, MMOMA, National Center for Contemporary Arts, Moscow Manege, and others.
